Dating in the Dark – A Novel Concept in Dating

With the infinite amount of dating sites available on the Internet, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that just about every single dating concept imaginable has been thought of and implemented somewhere in the world. Contrary to this belief, a new dating game called “Dating in the Dark” has recently been launched in the UK and has since spread to Australia due to its enormous popularity.

The foundation of the concept for “Dating in the Dark” revolves around the notorious claim that “looks don’t matter” when looking for love. The way it works is singles are given the opportunity to get to know a potential date in person, but before they actually see what they look like.

Contrary to an online survey stating forty percent of singles care more about personality than looks, it is all too common for singles to meet online and then be disappointed with their date’s actual physical appearance. Is it possible, then, that chatting online simply isn’t sufficient enough for gauging one’s personality? “Dating in the Dark” attempts to preserve the intimacy of one-on-one encounters without allowing people to actually see one another.

An evening of “Dating in the Dark” would begin in a traditional bar setting, where singles meet and casually mingle with one another. Once the guests are more relaxed with each other, waiters begin guiding everyone into a restaurant or dining room engulfed in complete darkness. The waiters use night vision goggles to assist the guests with their seats and meals. During the dinner, guests are seated in groups of about eight.

The next part of the evening involves a round of speed dating, which consists of meeting singles one-on-one for five minutes at a time – usually just enough time to decide whether or not you think you might connect with someone. The twist in this case is that the room is still completely dark, removing one of the aspects singles judge about others when first meeting potential dates. Participants make note of the singles with whom they would like to get to know further. When two participants share interest in one another at the end of the speed dating, they are encouraged to exchange details and further the connection.

It is not until all the participants return to the initial bar area that they will see who they met and liked while in complete darkness. “Dating in the Dark” gives people a genuine opportunity to gauge personality and compatibility without factoring in physical appearances.
